We never ask a patient (of any age or gender identity) about their relationships when anyone else is in the room; spouse, significant other, friend, sibling, mother, father, CHILD, etc. It can be anyone; the rates of child to parent negligence and elder abuse is terrifying and staggering. We’re taught to find distractors like this, especially when someone refuses to leave the room when we ask for privacy with the patient.
